What is your system doing?
Pick the symptom that matches. Each page explains what usually causes it, what you can safely check yourself first, and when it's time to call.
A lot of service calls end with a tripped breaker, a thermostat in the wrong mode, or a filter nobody remembered. If a quick check fixes it, good. You keep your money and your evening.
If the checks don't fix it, you'll at least be able to tell us exactly what the system is doing, which makes the visit faster.
Safety first
- Gas smell (rotten eggs or sulfur): don't touch light switches or the thermostat. Get everyone out of the house, then call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Burning electrical smell or smoke: turn the system off at the thermostat and switch off its breaker. If there's smoke or flame, get out and call 911.
- Water on or near electrical parts: shut the power to the system off at the breaker before you go near it.
- AC blowing warm air The fan runs, the air is warm. What to check
- AC running but not keeping up It never shuts off and the house creeps up. What to check
- AC frozen or iced-up line Ice on the copper line or the indoor coil. What to check
- Aux heat & a high winter bill Heat pump running constantly, big January bill. What to check

- Water around the air handler A puddle, a wet pan, or a ceiling stain. What to check
- Thermostat blank Dead screen, nothing responds. What to check
- Strange noise or smell Buzzing, banging, squealing, burning. What to check
